Uncertain Future for Three Children Who Lost Their Mother in La Chorrera

Three children, aged three, six, and seven, who were orphaned after their mother was murdered on February 19, are in the care of their aunt, although their future remains uncertain. Their mother was killed by her partner, with whom she also shared a blood relationship. Following this tragedy, the children must live with the relatives of their stepfather, who have avoided cooperating with the authorities of the Public Ministry since the beginning of the investigation. The three children, two of whom are of school age, were witnesses to the frequent heated arguments between their mother and stepfather. In the coming days, the three siblings will begin to receive assistance from the Unit for the Protection of Victims, Witnesses, Experts, and other Participants in the criminal process. Staff from the Comprehensive Care Center (CAI) in La Chorrera has also initiated a comprehensive socio-family assessment of the children's relatives. María de los Ángeles de la Cruz, in charge of the CAI in this district, stated that a technical team has already contacted the children's family for a home visit. The children reside in an area known as 'La Invasión', in sector five of El Progreso, in the corregimiento of Puerto Caimito. The purpose of this visit is to evaluate the family situation, provide guidance, legal and psychological accompaniment, and to coordinate assistance with other institutions. Other aspects emphasized during these visits include determining how and who will financially support the children, two of whom are of school age. The official added that links will be established with the National Secretariat for Childhood and Adolescence so that they can provide psychological support to the minors.
